Spending Valentine’s Day in Rome? Here are 3 Ways to Serve the Romance
23 January 2018

If you’ll find yourself in Rome for Valentine’s Day, you’re off to a good start to impress your special someone. The Eternal City is full of magical spots to steal a kiss, walk down charming streets holding hands, or candlelit tables for a romantic evening together. Last year we put together a list of our top 10 romantic spots around Rome, so have a look at that post for inspiration. This year, we’ve put together a few simple itineraries to help inspire you as you organize your evening.

Valentine’s Day Itineraries

The following ideas are organized by neighborhood and include where to walk around, where to eat, and where to eat. The itineraries don’t focus on only high-end, formal offerings, but suggest places that are authentic and offer high quality dishes, cocktails and experiences.

Valentine’s Day Itinerary 1: Campo de’ Fiori/Piazza Navona

(1) Start the evening festivities with a stroll along Via Giulia at sunset, about 5:30/6pm. Via Giulia runs parallel the Tiber River, but is less crowded by tourists and cars. (2) Along Via Giulia, stop at the unassuming Dom Hotel (Via Giulia 131, domhotelroma.com) for drinks at their sumptuous Achilli bar and restaurant. (3) After drinks, make your way back down to Via Giulia and head to dinner at Pierluigi (Piazza de’ Ricci 144, pierluigi.it), one of Rome’s most iconic restaurants, especially well known for local fish. If you’re not such a fish enthusiast and looking more for a more contemporary atmosphere, head to Hosteria Grappolo d’oro (Piazza della Cancelleria 80, hosteriagrappolodoro.it) near Campo de’ Fiori for inventive dishes and the freshest ingredients. (4) After dinner, grab dessert or an after-dinner digestif at Pantaleo (Piazza di San Pantaleo 4, pantaleoroma.it), a new restaurant boasting a strong mixology focus near the base of Piazza Navona.

Valentine’s Day Itinerary 2: Trastevere

(1) One of the most striking views of Rome is from the top of the Gianicolo Hill. The walk to the top of the hill is a pleasant one and made especially worth it with the view. From up here you can see virtually every monument in Rome: the Altare della Patria, the Pantheon, Colosseo, Spanish Steps, Quirinale. There is also a small park at the top of the hill that is great for a stroll if the weather permits. (2) From Gianicolo, head back down into Trastevere for a well-deserved cocktail at Santo (Via della Paglia 40, santotrastevere.it). Owned and operated by young Romans, Santo has become a popular spot for local Trasteverini looking for carefully crafted cocktails and a great vibe. (3) After a drink or two at Santo, head to nearby Dot Bistrot (Via Natale del Grande 52, Dot Bistrot Facebook) for an exceptional Italian dinner. The menu provides both fully realized fish dishes as well as traditional Roman. (4) As long as you’re not too full from dinner, make your way to Alcazar (Via Cardinale Merry del Val 14, livealcazar.com), a cinema-turned-dance club that’s full of the area’s young to middle-age crowd with live music everyday.

Where to stay

The Gianicolo vacation rental by ROMAC offers 3 bedrooms and 2 baths for up to 8 guests, perfect for several couples traveling together. Valentine’s Day Itinerary 3: Monti/Colosseo

(1) Explore the area known as Suburra in ancient Rome that lies just behind the forums by walking down Via Urbana and Via del Boschetto. Independent boutiques, small restaurants and caffe’s, and bars line the streets on the ground floor of vine-covered buildings. The area is becoming more popular with tourists, but the magic of integrating with the locals is still very alive. (2) At the intersection of Via Urbana and Via Leonina (next to the Cavour Metro stop), there’s a small piazza with a fabulous little bar, Suburra 1930 (Piazza Suburra 13-15, suburra1930.it). The cocktail menu features classic and signature cocktails, paired with a classic Italian aperitivo that includes a few savory nibbles with your drinks. (3) Following drinks head back to Via del Boschetto for dinner at La Barrique (Via del Boschetto 41B, La Barrique Facebook). La Barrique is a hidden gem in the Monti neighborhood, serving up a limited menu of high quality Italian dishes paired with unique wines from small producers. (4) For dessert, head to nearby Piazza degli Zingari for an artisanal gelato from Fatamorgana (Piazza degli Zingari 5, gelateriafatamorgana.com), and enjoy the rest of the evening in Piazza di Madonna dei Monti or a stroll down nearby Via dei Fori Imperiali.

Where to stay

The Monti vacation apartment by ROMAC is tucked away on a side street but just steps away from the heart of the Monti neighborhood. The 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment features a comfortable living room and complimentary wifi.
