10. Gianicolo Terrace

Gaze in awe at the most spectacular view of Rome from the Gianicolo (Janiculum) Hill with the sound of the Fontanone in the background, this spot definitely makes our list of romantic spots in Rome. A short taxi ride from Trastevere or a pleasant uphill walk will bring you directly to the open piazza with the incredible view. *Be there at noon any day of the week for the daily blast from the canone marking the time of day.

9. Orange Garden

Perched atop another one of Rome’s seven hills, the Aventine Hill, the Orange Garden (Giardino degli Aranci) features a stunning view of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. Stroll the romantic grove of local Roman bitter orange trees or bring a blanket and have a picnic. At sunset, the sun-glazed roof tops are a remarkable sight to see.

8. Laghetto dell’EUR

Take the metro or a taxi to the south edge of the city to the neighborhood known as the EUR. The Esposizione Universale di Roma was designed and built to host the administrative functions of the city of Rome, leaving the historic center to Romans and daily life. The laghetto, or artificial lake, is the neighborhoods main focal point. Blooming cherry blossoms in the spring circumvent the lake with beautiful, white flowers and sweet aromas. But a walk around the lake is perfect any time of the year, especially with a gelato in hand. Visit the famous Giolitti gelateria with the same great gelato as the one near the Pantheon but without the crowds.

7. Spanish Steps

Perhaps a bit cliché, but the Spanish Steps remain one of the world’s most romantic outdoor staircases. The grand Scala della Trinità, as it’s locally known, is a great place for a respite and a selfie. In the evening, cuddle up with your S.O. and people watch the hustle and bustle of shoppers in the piazza.

6. Lungotevere

The Lungotevere is the road that flanks the Tiber River. At dusk there’s less traffic making a stroll by the water romantic and magical. The way the city lights reflect in the water turns the panorama into an impressionist painting that’s come to life. Cross all the bridges and get to know the banks of the river; walking with a gelato in hand isn’t a bad idea either.

5. Fori Imperiali at Night

During the day, Via dei Fori Imperiali is flooded with tourists and traffic, but at night it’s one of the most romantic and elegant vias in Rome. The lights and shadows that pour over the ruins of ancient Rome’s original centers creates such a magical atmosphere. Sometimes a talented street performer can add to the experience with soft melodies on a guitar or violin, bringing the air to life. Make your way from Piazza Venezia to circling the Colosseum for a pleasant 30 minute walk with plenty of spots to steal a kiss along the way.

Romantic Spots in Rome

4. Via Margutta

Tucked behind Piazza di Spagna and Rome’s Tridente area is Via Margutta, a tranquil oasis among the chaos of the shopping streets. Zero traffic and just the sounds of a few pedestrians, artisans working, and the trickling of the Fontana degli Artisti make for a calming and romantic stroll. Grab a coffee or a prosecco at the local bar, browse an artist gallery, or have your name chiseled in marble.

3. Trevi Fountain

Iconic for Rome and recently cleaned, the Trevi Fountain is a must on the top 10 list of romantic spots in Rome. During the day, the large travertine shrine is packed with tourists catching a glimpse of King Triton while throwing coins in the basin with hopes to be back someday. Even during the evening there are plenty of people in the narrow open piazza in front of the fountain, but if you go late enough – or early enough in the morning – you can visit the fountain by yourself. The fountain at dawn or in the deep of the night is a spectacular sight.

Romantic Spots in Rome

2. Via Governo Vecchio

Running perpendicular to the foot of Piazza Navona, parallel to Corso Vittorio Emanuele, is the charming street of Via Governo Vecchio. Little vehicle traffic and loads of cute restaurants and storefronts make this street a great place for a romantic place to stop for lunch or evening gelato.
