Differences from your washing machine at home

Washing machines you’ll find at vacation rentals in Rome might be a bit different than what you’re used to at home. Here are some of the biggest differences:

• Laundry Load Limit. The most significant difference is the size of the washing machine. If you need to wash several pairs of jeans and/or towels, you might need to plan on doing a few loads.
• Temperatures in Celsius. Most newer models show temperatures in both Celsius and Fahrenheit but not all. Common temperatures are 20º, 30º, 40º, and 60º. Many detergents work better at lower temperatures, and lower temperatures actually save on energy. But for best results, refer to the user guide.
• Where’s the dryer? It’s much less common to find a dryer paired with your washing machine. In Rome most Italians still air dry their laundry either inside on foldable drying racks or outside on the line (which often becomes some of your most liked pictures on Instagram!) During the summer, your clothes will dry almost instantly so you won’t even miss the dryer.

*Note: A common issue with washing machines is their energy consumption and the building’s limited usage. If you have the washing machine, air conditioners, and a hair dryer all running at the same time, it’s possible that even turning on the living room light will trip the fuse. Check with your vacation rental agency about the power consumption ahead of time. There’s nothing worse than leaving a load in the wash before you go out only to come home and find your clothes just sitting there.

Dry Cleaning and Laundry Services

If you’re looking to get your clothes cleaned without the hassle of doing it yourself, there are of course plenty of places in Rome offering dry cleaning and laundry services as well. Prices are usually per item and generally take between 24 and 48 hours for turnaround, depending on the quantity. Sometimes clothes are transferred to an off-site facility outside the center for washing and pressing, so make sure to take note of every article of clothing you leave with the service.
