Testaccio is one of the best neighborhoods to eat typical Roman food, but for the last few years the neighborhood has seen an emergence of street food, giving life to a series of new opening for people who are looking to eat well and in an instant!
The Testaccio Market
Located between via Galvani and via Alessandro Volta, the new Testaccio Market is a large indoor market featuring not only food and groceries, but also some clothing stores and artisinal crafts. The market is open from Monday to Saturday from 8 to 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Each kiosk makes its own hours which aren’t always set but most of them open around 9 and close between 2 and 3. Friday the market is open all day until 6:30.

BOX 15 MORDI E VAI, by Sergio
Traditional stuffed sandwiches with typical Roman cucina povera: from tripe to picchiapò (a tomato-based sauce with meat), from spicy chicken to the famous Roman artichokes with pecorino. Their specialty is the l’allesso di Scottona, a boiled meat served in various ways. It’s also possible to enjoy the sandwich without bread if you’re counting those carbs. Medium price: €3
BOX 58 LE MANI IN PASTA, by Alessandro
Bakery with organic products and flour at km0 that offers all take away or dining in, with an express kitchen that changes daily. They offer traditional Roman dishes, like the classic carbonara, or if you’re in the mood for something a little different, ravioli filled with radicchio and speck, truffle, pistachio and ricotta.
BOX 59 ZOÈ, by Matteo
Defined as osteria vegetariana, Zoè offers smoothies as well as specialty fruit and vegetable juices. Their specialty juices consists of the the product juiced at a low speed, so as to maintain as much of the ingredients’ nutrients as possible, as suggested by the nutritionist who consulted on the design of the menu. One of the most requested juices is made of peper, apple and lemon, enjoyed an hour before eating to take advantage of it’s fat-burning effects. The kiosk offers a wide variety of ingredients, organic bread and cheese; if you want you can take advantage of the wide range of ingredients in the market to pick up all the ingredients and make your own juice at home!
In the spring Matteo is planning to open also for a special vegetarian breakfast, from 9 – 11, where for €5 you can grab a smoothie and something sweet from a small buffet prepared just for the occasion!
BOX 66 DESS’ART, by Costanza
A small bakery offering sweet and savory delicacies, specializing in Sicilian recipes. The owner and chef loves baking small morsels and produces a wide variety of finger-licking confections.

For the lovers of wine, thse boxes offer a vast menu and the possibility to taste wines at €2.50 a glass.
BOX 16-17 La contea del pane
Ideal for those who are looking to eat gluten-free, all of the baked goods are made without gluten. Some products cannot be kept together with the others by law, but the bakery where everything is baked isn’t located far away, so if you’d like something in particular you just need to ask and they’ll bring it straight from the oven as soon as possible.

BOX 89 La prosciutteria by Enzo & Lina
For those who’d like to try to real prosciutto that comes from Norcia, as well as many other delectable meats and cheeses available.
STRIT FUD
Immediately outside the market, at via Alessandro Volta 63-65, open from 10:30 to 9pm (11pm in the spring and summer months)
As the name indicates, Strit fud offers all kinds of food for eating on the go but with strong influences from Roman cuisine, especially that of the quinto quarto, or less desirable parts of the animal often eaten by the lower classes in ancient Rome. They have a wide offering of sandwiches (with meatballs, boiled meat or tripe), fried goodies (a must try: the cuoppo: fried fish in foil) and pasta dishes that change daily.

TRAPIZZINO
Via Giovanni Branca 88, open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 12 to 1am.
Realized by owner Stefano, the trapizzino is a triangle of pizza-like dough filled with different kinds of hot fillings influenced by Roman cuisine and served in a convenient paper sleeve, ready to be taken away and eaten on-the-go. Paired excellently with their delicious supplì (cheese filled, fried rice balls), with several varieties to choose from, in addition to the classic tomato and mozzarella.
