Hop-on Hop-off Buses in Rome: Comparisons
8 August 2014

During these hot summer days, walking all over Rome is not exactly a pleasant experience; so why not take advantage of one of the many Hop-on Hop-off bus services that feature 2 floors and stops close to all of the sites you came to see?

There are all kinds of services you can use. While the itineraries are similar, they each have some differences that you should take into consideration. Let’s look into them together:

City-Sightseeing-Roma

Citysightseeing Rome

  • Citysightseeing Rome: www.roma.city-sightseeing.it/eng/  The route starts at Termini station (but you can board at any stop) and includes stops at Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, the Colosseum, Circus Maximus, Piazza Venezia, the Vatican, Trevi Fountain and Piazza Barberini. Busses pass about every 10 minutes and you can purchase tickets directly on board. Tickets are available for 24, 48, or 72 hours and cost 22€, 28€, and 32€, respectively.
Trambus 110Open

Trambus 110Open

  • ATTENTION! THIS BUS LINE IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE!

Trambus 110Open: www.trambusopen.com/en/110open.cfm The Trambus also begins at Termini (but you can get on at any stop) and stops at the Colosseum, Circus Maximus, Bocca della Verità, Piazza Venezia, Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Barberini, so the route is fairly similar to the Citysightseeing service. Tickets cost 20€ for 24h or 25€ for 48h. There is also a family rate for 2 adults and 2 minors for 50€. Buses pass every 15 minutes. The service tied to ATAC, the public transport authority in Rome, so in the event of worker strikes (which happen every so often and are scheduled) the service is not available. With a Trambus ticket you are eligible for reduced fees at civic museums in Rome, such as the Capitoline Museums, Trajan’s Market, the Ara Pacis and several others.Take a look at the it’s site for special offers on tickets: www.trambusopen.com/en/carrello.cfm

Trambus Archeobus

Trambus Archeobus

This service will take you to discover the park at the ancient Appian Way where you can visit the famous catacombs, such as those of Saint Callisto and Saint Sebastian. There are four departures daily from Termini station so look carefully at the hours here: www.trambusopen.com/en/archeobus/schedule.cfm The ticket is valid for 24h and costs 20€. It’s possible to purchase a ticket valid for 48h for both the archeobus and the Trambus 110 for 30€.

Romeopentour depars from both Termini station and the Vatican. Stops are the same as the other lines but include a stop on the Lungotevere (along the river) for                     Castel Sant’Angelo and Piazza Navona. Buses pass every 25 minutes and cost 18€, 22€, and 28€ for 24h, 48, or 72h, respectively. If you purchase your ticket online                   you’ll receive a 10% discount.

  • Roma Cristiana Open Bus: www.terravision.eu/city-tours-europe/orpnet/rome-hop-on-hop-off.html
The stops for this service are St. Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum, Pantheon, Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, the Lateran Complex, Circus Maximus, Piazza Navona, Piazza Venezia. The tickets cost 20€ or 23€ for 24h or 48h and the bus passes every 15 minutes. If you decide to use this service you should reserve your ticket online and pick it up when you arrive in Rome at the office in St. Peter’s Square. The ticket is included with the Omnia Card (for more information read our previous post Roma Pass and Omnia Card: Let’s explain the Difference)

As you can see there are lots of options to choose from. If you’re still unsure, my vote goes to the comprehensive ticket for the Archeobus and Trambus 110Open for 30€. Treat yourself to the complete tour of Rome without waiting for normal buses under the hot Roman sun.

Hello, I am going to go to Rome next month. I am thinking to take the archeobus.
is it sure the archeobus doesn’t run no longer?
