Rome’s Craft Beer Scene
25 October 2017

When you think of eating and drinking in Rome, you’re first thought probably isn’t beer.

But you would be surprised how many smaller, national producers are putting out incredible beers. And Rome is seeing a renaissance in Italian pubs, a genre previously made up largely by Irish or British expat haunts. So if you’re visiting Rome and are afraid that you’ll be in a craft beer desert, fear not. We’ve even paired our nearest vacation rental if you need to make quick and frequent trips to the nearest pub.

Open Baladin

Craft Beer in Rome

Open Baladin

As soon as you walk through the doors on the small side street near Campo de’ Fiori, the floor-to-ceiling wall of beers tips you off that this is not an ordinary Italian pub. A large chalkboard menu is evidence of the constantly changing stock as small batches of craft beer make their way through the menu. Whether your preference is a dark ale, a smoother amber, or a fruity weiss, Open Baladin has a beer for every palate. Pair your beer with a delicious burger or an order of their homemade chips with pecorino and honey to live the full fantasy.

Be.Re.

For locals, the eating situation anywhere within earshot of the Vatican museums was almost certain to be a travesty. Then Be.Re. opened, bringing Italian craft beer to the masses. It’s an Italian pub that teamed up with Trapizzino, a recent Roman invention of fluffy pizza dough pita stuffed with saucy fillings inspired by traditional Roman dishes. Truly a match made in heaven.

Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fa’

Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa’

Translated from a rough Roman phrase “What did you come here for?” this pub is the definition of a casual hangout for the beer after work crowd that you’ll find in Trastevere. The pub offers a seasoned interior punctuated with dozens of taps serving up local craft beers to drink on the cobblestone street with your friends as you sneak a glance at the soccer match between conversation. Perfectly rough around the edges and just around the corner from Piazza Trilussa, Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fa’ is a haven for any real beer enthusiast visiting Rome.
