Finally Frida! Free entrance to the Frida Kahlo exhibition
6 May 2014

A Sunday at the museum visiting the Frida Kahlo Exhibiton at the Scuderie del Quirinale. In Rome until August 31st.

The masterpiece “The Bride Who Becomes Frightened When She Sees Life Open” by Frida Kahlo

I took advantage of the event “Serate dell’Arte” (Art Nights) organized by the Lottomatica (a Lottery operator) to visit the Frida Kahlo Exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale free of charge. I managed to enter after a looong line and was able to admire the great Mexican artist’s most important works, amongst which the famous paintings “Self-Portrait with Necklace of Thorns” and “Self-Portrait with Monkeys”.

The most striking was not only the technique she used to paint but above all how her works vibrate with expressional and emotional strength. Even though her works are categorized as modern art, they are subjects with a direct impact. Frida was a free woman; independent and anti-conformity and all this emerges from her works, involving the viewer (especially the female ones!). She loved her husband all her life, but did not despise other romantic relationships with men as well as women. She used her artistic capacity to reach a longed-for economic independence. And we’re talking about a woman from the 30’s!

It is a splendidly decorated exhibition with many information boards in English and Italian, hosted in the beautiful Scuderie del Quirinale. Before leaving you should not miss the panorama  which you can admire through the glass wall on the last floor!

The next “Serate dell’arte” event with free entry will be on May 25th, from 19.30 to 21.30 h (the exhibition closes at 22.30 h). Of course, I recommend arriving well in advance, as it is a very attractive event.

Every Sunday a workshop is held for kids between 7 and 11 years of age to get to know Frida Kahlo’s art. So while the children play, their parents can enjoy the exhibition.
